Tarot 101

Tarot 101

Oracle cards date back to the early 1400s and have been used in almost every culture to help people make decisions. Tarot cards give us a glimpse of a response to a question we already knew the answer to. You were born with innate wisdom. You have all the answers you need inside you. The tarot cards are here to help you strengthen your intuition so that eventually, you won’t need to consult the cards.

What is Tarot?
Tarot is a fun way to get in touch with your inner-oracle. Tarot cards are a deck of 78 playing cards divided into two sets: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. Major Arcana consist of 22 cards that imply major life lessons or important big picture themes. The Minor Arcana are divided into four suits and run Ace through King. We use the images on tarot cards to reflect an inner-knowing.

Interpreting the Cards
Everyone develops their own unique way of reading the cards – there is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Several people use 3-card spreads, but since I love books and reading, I use a story-based approach. I’ll sit with a question, clear the deck, shuffle, and then start pulling cards. The first card that is drawn, or falls out, gives me information about the tone of the reading. For example, if the 2 of cups is my first card, I know there will be guidance about partnerships or love. Then, I just turn over 3-4 more cards and identify a storyline. I look for at least one major arcana card. So if I don’t get a major arcana in the first few cards, I keep flipping until I get at least one.

Pro-tip: Think of pulling cards like journaling. Flipping the cards over gets your thoughts out of your head, and in front of you in a tangible way that helps you face decisions with honesty and clarity.

The suggestions in this free handout are my interpretations as taught to me by Deborah Mastelotto, author of The Tarot Primer – I invite you to make your own words and programming with your decks using this handout as a template.

Am I talking to your Soul right now? If so, pretty pretty please comment on this post and let me know what you’re most looking forward to getting out of the Tarot webinar!
